A Few Results of Not Being Active

Now that you know various of ways to be active, I'm here to tell you a few things that can  happen if you decide to not stay active. I know there are times when we don't feel like doing anything, and rather lay in bed all day or slump on the coach and spend all hours of the day watching TV. While some sort of relaxation is okay, an excessive amount can lead to health problems.

We all want to continue to grow without health issues, and sometimes it comes upon us out of the blue, but making sure you stay active is half the battle in making sure you don't go through it; the other half is actually making the effort to do it. Having healthy bones is one benefit that you can get, and taking the time to apply stress to them can allow them to grow sufficiently. "Bone stress causes a signal to be sent to the body to build bone density. If you don't stress your bones by exercising, you can suffer from low bone density, which can turn into a case of osteoporosis" (Haskell). Osteoporosis is a common condition, so it's evident that no one is 100% safe from it; however, taking the right precautions to prevent it from happening to you will limit your chance of getting it, and that goes for a lot of other conditions as well.

Something else I found interesting is that being inactive can actually slow down your metabolism. Metabolism is the process your body goes through in order to convert the food and drinks you consume into energy, and "if you have a slow metabolism, your body ends up storing a lot of the energy you consume. This leads to weight gain and puts you at a higher risk of developing heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, depression and anxiety, according to Harvard School of Public Health" (Haskell). I've always heard that "thin" people have a fast metabolism, but I don't think that's entirely true. I'm sure if they continue to eat carelessly and not exercise, that weight will eventually catch up to them; no one is safe when it comes to weight gain. This shows that weight gain and metabolism can be affected by how much you exercise, and not just on the amount of food you eat.

Going along those lines, lack of  aerobic exercises can also cause your immune system to weaken, making it hard for your body to fight of viruses (Haskell). You know that saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away"? Well, eating fruits is a natural way to build your immune system, but exercising plays a part in it as well. We shouldn't just rely on one strategy that improves our health; considering numerous ones can open you up different ways to choose to stay healthy; look at it as a healthy buffet of productive choices.

  1. This may have been enough to scare me into staying active. I am graduating this semester so I won't have access to our student rec center but that does not mean I need to stop working out. I would rather like to avoid diabetes and slowing my metabolism. I like eating junk food because I know I can work it off later but if these things happen to me then I'll be forced to eat salads; I eat them now but not because I have to. I have also found that I am in a better mood after working out and all my friends know that I should try to stay in a better mood.
You are right about fruits and vegetables. I feel like I have more energy when I eat healthier and I feel cleaner. I said I like my junk food but I also try to enjoy my fruits and vegetables because I can eat less in amount and feel less likely to need a mid-afternoon snack.
It worked, officially been scared into wanting to keep working out after I graduate.

  2. I am so happy that you wrote an article about the dangers of physical inactivity. I don't think many people realize how many health issues can come from being inactive. I am happy that you mentioned all of the different types of diseases that are possible so people are aware of the severity of it. I did not know anything about bone stress and how important exercise is in preventing osteoporosis. I watched a video called 23 and a half. It talked about how just 30 minutes of physical activity a day has been known to decrease health risk for all of the diseases that you mentioned. I love that you mentioned that metabolism is affected by the exercise you have. Your article was very informative!

  3. This post really motivates me! These are things that I will definitely remember when I think about skipping the gym to lay on the couch and watch netflix. It is very important to make sure that we are active for so many reasons. I also didn't realize the severe damage that can be done to our bones if we are inactive. That is honestly really scary. Reading things like this really helps me remember that I really need to take care of my body all the time. I have appreciated all of your posts!

  4. This post spoke to me! In a community health course I took I watched this ted talk called "23 & 1/2 hours", it basically said that 30 mins of physical activity was the cure to all these disease. After seeing that I've been increasing the amount of physical activity I do in general. If more people knew about the consequences discussed in your post and in the video, I would hope they would reconsider their lifestyle. Unfortunately, I don't think people realize this until it's too late. Great post!!

  5. I agree with you completely that people are not safe from weight gain, and I also agree with you that people who are "thin" claim that they have a fast metabolism is false. I have heard plenty of people who are not overweight or obese tell me that they don't work out because they have a fast metabolism. Personally, I feel the reason some people say that because they are always on the move and being active without even knowing; what I mean is that some people may walk a lot and get the proper amount of physical activity that they need, some people may work long hours at a job that requires them to do manual labor, etc. I just feel there is more to it than a person just having a fast metabolism.

  6. Nice job again Whitney. Not only in the first post did you tell us what would happen to our bodies if we were to work out, but now you are telling us what will happen if we don't work out. I like how you made that a complete circle. I don't think I am the most in shape person, and after reading this I now know that it doesn't take a lot and I should really get up and start moving some more. Thank You

  7. I liked how instead of focusing on physical activity and staying active you talked about what can happen if you don't. Most people don't and I too am slowly starting to exercise less. I totally agree with how it keeps the immune system running, as well as the metabolism, and the bones strong. Makes me think I should hit the gym more. Good post.
