Additional Ways To Stay In Shape At Home

I did my very best in trying to find an at home work out routine, but I couldn't fully touch upon the topic. Many of the searches I found involved ads mentioning workout videos, and others included using weights. The approach I was going for was finding a simple, set plan that you can follow, and even though I wasn't able to completely satisfy that requirement, I did come across a few articles that mention various ways you can exercise at home without equipment. If the following information doesn't fulfill your needs, then here's a link to a more advanced workout plan you can follow: https://www.realsimple.com/health/fitness-exercise/workouts/weekly-workout-checklist

The article 10 Ways You Can Exercise At Home Without Any Equipment by Suzanne Hiscock goes about listing 10 different exercises that you can do at home: walking, jumping jacks, push ups, leg lifts, crunches, jogging in place, squats, light weight lifting, dancing, and step exercises. Now before you say that's too much work, hear me out. These exercises aren't required for you to do everyday, but at the same time if you want great results, it's best to do them in moderation. Look at it this way; if some exercises aren't flattering to you, feel free to pick and choose the ones that appeals to you. Everyone is familiar with most of these exercise terms, so I'd like to just elaborate on a few of them.

Walking. This is the most easy and common exercise you can do. Going from class to class, class to dining hall, dining hall to your room, room to class, etc., are many instances where walking takes up most of our day. Hiscock's article mentions that "[walking] will help to tone up your legs, while getting some low impact aerobic exercise as well" (Hiscock, 2007). This article is a bit outdated, but another article, Put Your Best Foot Forward: Why Walking Is Good For You, backs this information up in a way: "certified fitness professional Jolynn Baca Jaekel explains: 'What I love about walking is that anyone can do it at any age and any fitness level. Plus it is good for your heart, your head and your wallet'" ("Put Your Best Foot," 2014). Walking is free and comes with benefits that can improve your body's health. You're really being physically active everyday if you think about it, but adding on additional exercises is good too.

I know my target is to inform you of exercises that you can do in your home/dorm. I am aware that an exercise I mentioned is "light weight lifting," so you may be thinking, "I don't have weights in my room," but the good news is that any type of weight will do. You know those large textbooks in your room? Yeah, they're free to use! Jogging in place is also listed, but if you live in a dorm on a floor other than the first floor, jogging in place inside is probably not the best thing to do. This is one exercise that I feel you have to plan for; don't pick a time when you know people will be sleeping (haha). I also believe that you should have fun while you stay active. Dancing is considered an exercise too, and it's also "great for your heart. Not only that, but it can lift your spirits as well, and give your overall feeling a boost" (Hiscock, 2007). If you're like me and feel awkward when you dance around other people, but comfortable when you're alone, then turn on some music and just dance in front of your pillows! Adding music while you exercise can make it more fun too; it makes it feel like you're not even working out (at least to me it doesn't). Let loose and dance on!

  1. Once again, I really enjoyed your post especially since it is something that I am passionate about! That website did have useful information on it. I never really though about using textbooks or simple household items as weights, but that really would work! I want to start doing exercises at home whenever I don't have time to go to the gym.

I never really thought about how simply walking could be good exercise. I guess any simple physical activity is good for you though. I love dancing but I have absolutely no idea what I am doing when I dance. Usually I embarrass myself in front of people so dancing in front of my pillows will probably be what I stick to. I really like the creativity :) Great job this week and thank you for taking the extra time to look up at-home workouts.

  2. I think that this article is great, especially for college students. I know that many people see exercising as being too much of an obstacle. The idea of having to carve out an hour in their day to head to the local gym is too daunting of a thought for people. I think its awesome for people to realize that they can get exercise in the comfort of their room. Walking is extremely important. In a video title 23 1/2, it states how simply walking for 30 minutes of your day has been known to reduce the prevalence of various diseases related to physical and mental health. Even doing tabata workouts which are only short bursts of 8 different exercises for 20 seconds with a 10 second break have been known to have great health benefits. Good article!

  3. Still got some great information for us to use! I used to work out in my room but I never liked it because I wasn't motivated but there are some of these things that I should do while in my room when I'm not doing anything else. My family got a used treadmill from a family friend and we had to move it out of the basement when everyone started using it. I know you were looking for cheap at home ways to work out, but walking, jogging, and running has help all of my family members and even though not everyone has the same equipment, I have to agree that finding the space to do these exercises will be beneficial.
Thank you for another great post!

  4. Girl, you are definitely educating us! This is a great post as well and I'm all for staying fit. It is important to stay in shape and even if you can't hit the gym you can do things to stay fit in your own environment. You can do the simplest little workouts in your living room or your bedroom to get the job done. Believe it or not, dancing IS a workout. I used to go to the gym everyday until I started back dancing. When I go to dance practice, that would be my workout for the day. Three long hours of just dancing would ware you out lol! But I'm totally all for the stay in shape at home thing.

  5. This is such a great post because I know some people do not like going to the gym for many different reasons. I used to hate going to the rec here because I felt embarrassed and I would always see so many people. If going to the gym is not something you like, then in home workouts will do the same! I sometimes still workout at home if I dont have time to go to the gym or just want to workout alone. You have some great tips of different weight methods and Im glad you spend extra time on this blog because it is so important. Good job!

  6. Thank you so much for making this post because it taught me a lot. Before I read this post, I would always wonder how I could be able to stay in shape at home. Personally, I don't like going to the gym because I just hate having to travel there; I always thought that I was a home workout person. You definitely had educated me about about how I can be able to get physical exercise in without having to leave home. Lastly, this post is very well written and informative!
